It’s thin paper, cut into shapes and stacked with a little space between each sheet, and a light shining from behind. The shadows between the sheets are what make the picture look deep.

Next we plan the layers. Some parts of your scene go near the front, and some sit further back. Each layer gets cut so the light can get through where it needs to. After that, the layers go into the frame, and the light is fitted behind them.

Try it in a dim spot, like beside the bed or on a bookshelf. Bright sunlight makes the picture look flat, so keep it out of the sun. In a shop, the counter is a good place for it.

What will it show? Keep the scene simple, with clear shapes. Very tiny details can get lost once the paper is cut. Then think about the space. Tell us how much room you have, since a wall, a shelf and a desk all suit different sizes. And let us know who it’s for.
