Custom Chinese food boxes are coated paperboard container that folds into a pagoda shape with an interlocking lid, built to carry sauced dishes without the box itself leaking. We provide Full-panel printing that wraps the logo across all four sides, and pairing it with custom paper bag printing keeps delivery bags on the same branded look.
A Chinese food box in the USA holds sauced and steaming dishes without leaking because the paperboard coating runs continuously across the fold lines, not just the flat panels; the fold is where most leaks actually start. Most runs use 18pt to 24pt SBS paperboard, and our production team checks coating coverage at every crease before a batch ships, since a coating that looks even on a flat sheet can thin out right where the box is scored and folded. This matters more for wet dishes like lo mein or kung pao than dry items, where sauce sits directly against the seam for the whole delivery window. For a comparison format constructed around a rigid rim instead of a folded seam, see Cups Printing USA.
Yes, the two common layers behave differently under the same sauce. A PE-lined paperboard remains elastic through the fold and holds liquid for the full delivery window; a wax-coated board can handle sturdier on the frame but manages to crack at the scored crease once folded into shape, letting grease wick through just where the box was bent. On one production run, our quality control team found a wax-coated batch tested leak-free flat but showed sauce staining at the fold within 30 minutes of holding; changing that SKU to a PE-lined stock at the same calliper solved it without changing the box style. If your product requires a rigid container instead of a folding one, custom coffee bags with a valve in the USA use a completely separate construction.

Printed boards on a Chinese food box cover all four sides plus the base, so a logo stays visible whether the box is upright or set down on its side in a delivery bag. Offset printing claims larger runs with precise color matching, while flexo printing works excellently for smaller batches without the plate cost. Our procedure team checks logo placement against the fold lines before print, since artwork centred for a flat panel can land off-centre once the box is erected into its final pagoda shape. Hale Path Packaging tests every Chinese food box structure against FDA food-contact material requirements and our own fold-line coating check before a design is approved for production. A noodle brand’s wax-coated boxes tested fine flat but stained through at the fold within the first delivery cycle; we rebuilt the same box in PE-lined stock at matched GSM, re-tested the fold, and the leak stopped. Orders start at 100 units with a 7–14 working day turnaround, and our team stays involved from coating selection through to the final fold test, not just print production.

It means a barrier layer, PE or wax, applied to the interior paperboard so oil and sauce can not soak through to the outer surface.
A coated paperboard box breathes slightly, decreasing condensation buildup; a sealed plastic box traps additional steam and constantly arrives soggier.
Flexo printing works excellently for smaller runs; it avoids the plate setup cost that offsets printing's efficiency at higher volumes.
Pre-production samples are arranged so you can review fold consistency, layer coverage, and print color before the full run is verified.
Standard sizes run from 8oz for small sides up to 66oz for family-style orders, with custom sizes available for specific dish types.
Yes, any material touching food directly is required to satisfy FDA food-contact material requirements, which applies to both the paperboard stock and the interior coating.
Some states have restricted PFAS-based grease-resistant layers, particularly, so it is worth ensuring your layer type satisfies your state's current packaging rules before ordering.
Yes, reclaimed paperboard can be used as the base stock, though it may require a slightly heavier layer weight to hold the same grease resistance as pure board.
A PE-lined layer will not break down in a standard composting stream, so a PE-coated box should go to recycling instead of compost, even if the base stock is paper.
