Green tea pouches need a tighter light barrier than most other tea packaging, since green tea's catechins break down faster under UV exposure than black tea's more oxidised compounds do. Made for tea brands, wellness companies, and speciality grocers across the USA.
Why does green tea Pouches lose its color and sharpness faster on the shelf than black tea packaged in the exact same pouch? It comes down to catechins, the antioxidant compounds that give green tea its flavor and health appeal. They degrade under light exposure far faster than black tea’s more stable, oxidized compounds. A green tea pouch built with a standard clear or lightly tinted film simply doesn’t protect against that at the same rate as a fully opaque or metalised barrier would.
A specialty tea brand in Austin came to Hale Path Packaging after customers started noting their green tea looked duller and tasted flatter within weeks of purchase, despite being stored properly. Their previous pouch used a lightly tinted film that worked fine for their black tea line, but wasn’t built to protect green tea’s more light-sensitive compounds. We switched their green tea SKUs to a fully opaque metalized film while keeping the tinted option for their black tea range. “Didn’t realize green tea needed different packaging entirely,” the brand’s founder said once customer complaints about flavor and color dropped to nearly zero. Same tea, same supplier, same shelf time, the fix was matching the barrier to the actual product inside it.

Treating green tea packaging the same as black tea packaging is one of the most common mistakes small tea brands make, and it’s a gap Hale Path Packaging flags before a design ever goes to print. We supply tea brands in Austin, wellness companies in Los Angeles, and speciality grocers in Atlanta with catechin-safe tea packaging built around how quickly light degrades green tea specifically. Our flexible packaging barrier guide breaks down which film levels suit different tea categories.

So what actually determines how long green tea holds its color and flavor once it’s packaged? Really, it comes down to how much light the film actually blocks, not just whether the pouch looks opaque at a glance. A lot of loose-leaf tea packaging rated for general freshness still lets enough UV through to fade green tea noticeably within its shelf life, even when that same film works fine for a more stable tea category. Matching barrier rating to the specific tea inside, rather than using one film across an entire product line, is usually what separates a green tea pouch that holds up from one that quietly fades before it sells through.
Hale Path Packaging designs and produces flexible tea packaging for wellness and specialty food brands across the USA.

Fully opaque or metalized film runs slightly higher per unit than a lightly tinted option, though the cost difference is usually small relative to the reduction in returns and flavor complaints.
Green tea's catechins degrade faster under light than black tea's more oxidized compounds — so a film that holds up fine for black tea can still let green tea fade well before its shelf life is up.
Compostable and recyclable film structures are both available, and going that route doesn't mean weakening the light barrier protecting the tea's flavor and color.
Digital print runs typically start around 500 units, with production taking roughly 2 to 3 weeks, which varies a bit with film complexity and finish.
Yes — a nitrogen-flush option displaces oxygen before sealing, which extends freshness further on top of whatever light barrier the film already provides.
Loose-leaf usually does better with a reclosable zipper, while single-use tea bag sachets are fine with just a heat-seal, since those get opened once and used right away anyway.
